A 34-year-old Raleigh native who has been a participant of Wake Enterprises for more than 15 years. Born three months prematurely, it was evident from birth that Liz’s journey would look differently than most. At three months old, she was diagnosed with a severe visual impairment and, years later, autism.
Upon high-school graduation, Liz’s mother, Tricia, was desperate to find a place for Liz that would continue to help her develop as an adult while providing her with the love and care her disabilities required. She visited several places but continued to run into roadblocks because of Liz’s visual impairment. The combination of her disabilities was unique and required a level of attention Tricia simply could not find … until she came across Wake Enterprises. Tricia found that not only was Wake Enterprises incredibly welcoming and the perfect developmental fit for Liz, but they didn’t skip a beat when they learned of Liz’s visual impairment. The rest is history!
“At Wake Enterprises, I know they care about my daughter. They care about her safety. They care about her development. They care about her happiness. I have a partner in WE and they have shown me that I am not on this journey alone. Just because Liz has reached adulthood, doesn’t mean the journey is over for her. My job isn’t finished. It continues, and to know I have a partner who will walk alongside us every step of the way just means everything!” — Tricia, Liz’s mom
Wake Enterprises has helped Liz grow in all aspects of everyday life including self-care, advocacy, language development and job skills. Perhaps most exciting of all is the fact that Liz is earning a paycheck. Having a job and contributing to the workforce has increased Liz’s self-esteem and given her a sense of value and purpose. A sense of belonging. And for a mother, there’s nothing more meaningful than that.
